Armed Robbery at Troy Shell Gas Station Leads to Arrest, Felony Charges, and Circuit Court Case

TROY, Mich. (Oakland County) — A late-night armed robbery at a Troy gas station is now headed to circuit court after Troy Police say a suspect entered the store carrying what appeared to be an AK-style rifle, pointed it at the clerk, and demanded cash.

According to Troy Police, the armed robbery occurred early Thursday morning, Oct. 30, 2025, at the Shell Gas Station located at 6951 Rochester Road, Troy, MI. Officers were called to the scene around 2:40 a.m. following reports that the robbery had taken place roughly ten minutes earlier. Authorities say the clerk turned over cash from the register, and the suspect fled on foot. No injuries were reported.

Surveillance video released by the Troy Police Department reportedly shows the suspect approaching from the south side of the building around 2:19 a.m., entering the store, confronting the clerk, and then fleeing south behind the building. The suspect was described as a stocky Black male wearing a black ski mask, black hoodie, blue sweatpants, black tennis shoes, and black-and-gray gloves.

Troy Police later identified the suspect as Joseph Louis Carter, a 38-year-old man from Detroit. Authorities say Carter was arrested days later, and prosecutors filed multiple felony charges related to the robbery and firearm allegations. Following court proceedings, the case was bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court, where it will continue through the next stages of the criminal process.

For many local business owners, including many within the Chaldean community, incidents like this underscore ongoing concerns about violent robberies and the safety risks faced by retail workers and store operators.
