Mark Savaya appointed as U.S. Special Envoy to Iraq by President Donald Trump
On October 19th, 2025, President Donald Trump appointed Chaldean business man and community leader Mark Savaya as the United States Special Envoy to Iraq.
Mark Savaya was born in Iraq and now lives in the United States. His family originates from the Chaldean village of Tel Keppe in northern Iraq. Savaya’s appointment is the first major political position held in the United States government by a Chaldean, serving as a role model to other Chaldeans around the United States wishing to become politicians.
President Donald Trump announced this appointment in a Truth Social page, stating “Mark's deep understanding of the Iraq–US relationship and his connections in the region will help advance the interests of the American people through his diplomatic engagement and direct communication with Iraqi officials as special envoy.
As special envoy, he will act as a direct representative for US interests in Iraq, coordinating joint initiatives, maintaining diplomatic negotiations, and ensuring transparent communication between US and Iraqi governments on security, political, and economic priorities.”
The President also praised Mark Savaya’s work in Michigan to help secure votes, referring to Savaya as “a key player in my campaign.”

“I am deeply humbled, honored, and grateful to President Donald J. Trump for appointing me as Special Envoy to the Republic of Iraq,” stated Savaya on X. “I am deeply committed to strengthening the U.S. - Iraq partnership under President Trump’s leadership and guidance.”
